On Wednesday, November 18, The Mamou Rotary Club, in conjunction with several local sponsors, presented a special program for sixth grade students of Mamou Elementary in the Mamou High School auditorium. The “Teach Me to Make a Gumbo” program was geared toward sixth grade students, who each received a bag of ingredients needed to make a gumbo at home with the help of a loved one.
MHS Principal Liz Chatelain stated, “This was a really great opportunity to work with the Mamou Rotary Club. We appreciate any opportunity to partner with the community because we are a community-based school.”
Mamou Rotary Club President Valli Soileau said, “Our gumbo program was awesome! A huge thank you to Liz Chatelain and all of the employees at Mamou High School for making this program run so smoothly.” She added, “The parents were happy to be there. The children were very well behaved and lots of local culture enthusiasts showed up to volunteer with handing out bags and door prizes.”
Approximately 50 door prizes were awarded, and everyone in attendance enjoyed the educational and cultural program. Soileau says the Mamou Rotary Club plans to do this again next year.
Sponsors for the program were T-Boys’s Slaughter House, Piggly Wiggly of Mamou, Mikey’s Donut King, KVPI, Savoie’s Roux, Luke Deshotels, Barry and Angie Marcantel Soileau, Robert L. Stevens Land Surveying LLC, Douget’s Cajun Products, Krazy Cajun Cafe’, Let’s Party (Denise Duplechin and Lauren Smith), Cajun Country Rice, Savoy Heights, Kim’s Total Image and Reed’s Pharmacy.
