Pet show, cookery winners announced

Evangeline Parish

The 4-H Cotton Pickin’ Pet Showand Cotton Commodity Cookery and Ambassador Contest were held Wednesday, October 12 at the Ville Platte Civic Center.
More than 90 pets were entered in the show this year. Congratulations to all 4-H club members participating in this annual event.
Ashley Clark, Wendy Fontenot, Jennie Semien, Susan Verrette, Joey Fontenot, Yvette Fontenot, Brooke Soileau and Sarah Brunet along with Beth Jones, Lachanda Alfred and Jenny Ortego judged, coordinated the judges and organized treats for exhibitors and pets. They are all employees of the Evangeline Bank and Trust Company, and gave time from work to assist with the pet show and donated supplies for the event. They volunteered their time and efforts and did an excellent job. A special “Thanks” to each of them.
The pet show is co-sponsored by the Cotton Festival Association, the Evangeline Bank and Trust Company, and the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service, a branch of the LSU Agriculture Center.
Winners in each division were:
Division A - Cats: Best Groomed - 1st – Beau Fontenot, Bayou Chicot 4-H; Most Obedient - 1st – Mia Jones, Sacred Heart 4-H; Best Dressed Pet - 1st – Makayla Jones, Ville Platte 4-H; and Best Costumed Pair - 1st – Makayla Jones, Ville Platte 4-H.
Division B - Rabbits: Shortest Ears - 1st – Hannah Arabie, James Stephens 4-H; Best Groomed - 1st — Peyton Guillory, Sacred Heart 4-H; Longest Ears - 1st - Peyton Guillory, Sacred Heart 4-H; and Softest Fur - 1st – Deana Blankenship, James Stephens 4-H.
Division C - Bird and Fowl: Smallest- 1st — Hannah Arabie James Stephens 4-H; Most Unusual - 1st – Macie Campbell, Bayou Chicot 4-H; Longest Beak - 1st – Angel Brasseaux, Mamou 4-H; and Most Colorful - 1st – Macie Campbell, Bayou Chicot 4-H.
Division D - Puppy: Best Costumed -1st – Kayleigh Silva, Bayou Chicot 4-H; Most Colorful - 1st – Jasmine Richard, Bayou Chicot 4-H; Most Lovable - 1st – Landon Hicks, Vidrine 4-H; and Prettiest Eyes - 1st—Evan Duhon, Vidrine 4-H.
Division E - Small Dogs: Best Costumed Pair - 1st –Ava Kordish, Bayou Chicot 4-H; Most Colorful - 1st – Kaylie Granger, Mamou 4-H; Best Trick - 1st – Elayne Elnaggar, Pine Praire 4-H; and Prettiest Coat - 1st ­­— Gage Ardoin, Pine Prairie.
Division F - Medium/Large Dogs: Best Costumed Pair - 1st – Macie Campbell, Bayou Chicot 4-H; Most Colorful - 1st – Jace Ortego, Sacred Heart 4-H; Best Groomed - 1st – Sam Vellion, Sacred Heart 4-H; and Best Trick - 1st – Camryn Fontenot, Bayou Chicot 4-H.
Division G - Any Other Pets: Smallest - 1st – Kaylie Granger, Mamou 4-H; Most Unusual - 1st — Jordan Pullen, Basile 4-H; Most Colorful - 1st – Katelyn Guillory, James Stephens 4-H; and Largest - 1st – Landon Hicks, Vidrine 4-H.

Cookery contest winners

Seventy five dishes were entered in the Beef, Seafood, Egg, and Sugar Cookery Contests which are sponsored by The Louisiana Cotton Festival Association, The Evangeline Cattleman’s Association, Mikey’s Donuts, and Paul’s Meat Market and Grocery.
The Parish Winners in the Beef Cookery were: Low-Calorie Main Dish: Benjamin Fontenot, Sacred Heart, 7th Grade, with Low Fat Mini Meatloaf; One Dish Meal: Emily Wallace, Sacred Heart, 5th Grade, with Lasagna Roll Up; and Quick and Easy: Emily Deshotel, Vidrine 7th, Grade, with Taco Lasagna.
Seafood Parish Winners were: Shrimp: Emily Shaner, Bayou Chicot, 6th Grade, with Shrimp Chowder; Crawfish: Ella Ortego, Sacred Heart, 6th Grade, with Crawfish Dip; and Other Seafood: Benjamin Fontenot, Sacred Heart, 7th Grade, with Pop’s Catfish Court Bouillion.
Egg Dessert Winner: Ian Coreil, Sacred Heart, 5th Grade, with a Turtle Trifle; Egg Main Dish Winner: Connor Duplechin, Mamou, 4th Grade, with Crustless Vegetable Cheese Quiche; and Egg Appetizer/Salad Winner: Ava Kordish, Bayou Chicot, 5th Grade, with Cream Cheese and Bacon Eggs.
Sugar Baked Division: Julie Mabe, Vidrine, 4th Grade, with Fresh Strawberry Pie with Cream Cheese Topping and Sugar Non-Baked Division: Emilee Douget, Basile, 5th Grade, with Peanut Butter Fudge.
State Ambassador Winners for their Commodity Speeches are as follows: Gabrielle Fontenot, Sacred Heart, 11th; Andrew Fontenot, Sacred Heart, 8th; Silas Fontenot, Sacred Heart, 7th; Gabriel Fontenot, Sacred Heart, 7th; Tucker Fontenot, Sacred Heart, 6th; and Ellen Deshotel, Vidrine 5th.
The Seafood, Beef, and Sugar and Egg Parish Winners will represent Evangeline Parish in the Area 4-H Cookery Contests to be held in Alexandria or Crowley in March of 2017. The Ambassador Winners will represent the parish in the state Ambassador Contest in Baton Rouge in April of 2017.
