February 16, Meeting
Rotarian Anita Fontenot invited Dr. Gwen Fontenot, the interim Dean of the B.I. Moody III College of Business Administration at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, to address the February 16, meeting of the Ville Platte Rotary Club. A native of Vidrine, Gwen gave a brief background noting that she and her family ran a weekend auction in Vidrine for several years.
Gwen stated the B.I. Moody III College of Business Administration has 2200 undergraduate and graduate students with many majors in diverse areas. She then discussed the undergraduate internship program, noting that this provides an opportunity for junior and senior students to gain hands-on experience by working in their intended major or minor, such as hospitality management, for example. She added that students enrolled in the internship program work approximately 150 hours over the course of a semester and must maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average. She also said that requirements vary according to the student’s major. She closed by stating that the business college will host a career fair on Wednesday, March 16, for students and employers.
In other business, Rotarian Wayne Vidrine announced that the annual Camp Ryla is coming up in June and this year two students from Sacred Heart, along with two alternates, will be selected among the applicants received to be sponsored by the club and attend the camp.
President Mitch Fontenot announced that the Shots for Tots program will be held in conjunction with National Shots for Tots Week April 16-23. He said there is a lot of information about Shots for Tots online and asked for volunteers to help spread the word to get parents to bring their children to get their shots and start planning for the program.
