VP Rotary welcomes Keep Evangeline Beautiful representatives

Becky Buller and Susan LaHaye, board members of the Keep Evangeline Beautiful campaign, addressed the October 27, meeting of the Ville Platte Rotary Club. Buller commended the group for their recent involvement in cleaning up the Native Plant Heritage Garden and getting the youth of the community involved by having the Interact Club assist with the project. She said the board is made up of 13 members who are involved in spreading the word about the litter problem, which is out of control. She emphasized the importance of teaching children in school the importance of keeping your community clean beginning at a young age. To that effect, trash cans with decals are placed at all the parish schools, and younger students are given coloring sheets. She admitted it is hard to cover the entire parish, but they are doing their best. LaHaye added that she spoke with Sacred Heart and the Interact Club is going to clean up the area behind the football field at the school. Buller said one idea for a project is to identify problem roads and adopt a road to maintain. She said more people need to be reached and encouraged business people to add a line to any radio or print advertisements about keeping Evangeline beautiful and clean. She also said the Rotary Club can serve as leaders and mentors to work with the youth of the community to educate, motivate and get them actively involved in keeping their community clean.
