Basile man takes own life in stand off with police

On Wednesday evening, Basile Police Chief Allen Ivory Jr. was contact by family members of David Michael Aucoin, 46, 1708 Ford Ave., Basile, stating that Aucoin was acting irrationally and hallucinating. At the time of the call, it was reported that Aucoin was sitting on his front porch with two loaded weapons.
According to the Basile Police Department, a family member was with Aucoin on the front porch attempting to calm him down. Aucoin then allegedly grabbed one of the loaded weapons and ran off into a wooded area near the home.
Basile police officers were called to the scene, along with the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office, Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries and the Eunice Police Department’s K-9 unit, who assisted.
Neither the Basile Police Department nor Aucoin’s family members were able to get him to respond to their pleas. Law enforcement officials secured the area and attempted to get Aucoin to surrender his weapon peacefully and leave the wooded area. After a stand off of several hours, officers eventually confronted Aucoin in a heavily-wooded area approximately 80 yards from his residence. Aucoin turned his weapon on himself and was fatally wounded with a self-inflicted gun shot. The coroner announced Aucoin dead at the scene at approximately 10:15 p.m.
An Evangeline Parish deputy was injured during the confrontation with Aucoin, though the injury was not weapon related. The deputy was treated at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Ville Platte and released.
The Basile Police Department is currently investigating this case.
