Beast was on the Feast menu at Mamou Saturday

Plenty of people took advantage of the near perfect weather Saturday to sample some near perfect eats at the 2013 Beast Feast at St. Ann Catholic Church in Mamou.
The booths were colorfully decorated in a variety of themes. Best booth awards went to “Sister Act,” Brenda Guillory and Jackie Verrette, first place; and “Camo Sisters,” Jeanora Deville, Mona Wilis, Glenda Landreneau and Debbie Courville, second place.
But it was the food that most of the visitors wanted to examine during the cook off, and the winning dishes gives a good idea of the variety.
In the Game Division, Jason Tate, in the Tiger Tailgators booth, got first place in the fowl category with Gumbo a’ Canard (duck). Mike and Emily Fontenot, in the Pumpkin Patch booth, placed first in the big game category with Deer Pasta. Krista Vidrine and Misti Fontenot, in the Crew de Souer (sisters) booth, got second place in the big game category with their version of Deer Pasta. Kevin Landreneau, in the Tiger Tailgators booth, placed first in the small game category with e’cureuil (squirrel) Sauce Piquante.
In the Seafood Division, the Fontenots, in the Pumpkin Patch booth, placed first with stewed fish; David Ardoin, in the T-Boys booth, placed second with T-Boy Crab and Shrimp a’la King.
Evangeline Parish Clerk of Court Randy Deshotel called out the auction. Included among the 19 items auctioned were a $600 recliner, a $250 rotisserie turkey fryer and steamer, a $150 LSU/Saints banner, a $120 LSU gift pack and a $100 dutch oven.
