Clinton, Trump win Louisiana primaries

Evangeline Parish voters aligned with the rest of the state of Louisiana when it came to the Presidential Preference Primaries held on Saturday night.
Hillary Clinton won the state’s Democratic Primary in a landslide as she bested Bernie Sanders by winning 70 percent of the vote (with 93 percent of the state’s precincts reporting). Clinton did particularly well in Evangeline Parish as she won 1,319 votes which resulted in 63 percent of the vote, compared to Sanders’ 24 percent.
All 10 candidates on the ballot received votes.
The Republican race proved to be closer as Donald Trump was declared the winner after claiming 42 percent of the votes compared to Ted Cruz who picked up 38 percent of the vote, while Marco Rubio was a distant third with 11 percent of the vote (with 93 percent of the state’s precincts reporting).
Trump won Evangeline Parish by receiving 730 votes for 47 percent of the vote, defeating Ted Cruz who had 38 percent of the vote, and Rubio with a mere 9 percent.
As was the case on the Democratic side, all 14 candidates on the Republican ballot also received votes in the parish.
The Louisiana Primaries were part of the Super Saturday slate of elections for both parties.
Jimmy Lafleur meanwhile was re-elected to the Republican State Central Committee for 28th Senatorial District, Division C as he edged out challenger Toni Aguillard in Evangeline Parish with 52 percent of the vote but took 73 percent of the vote in St. Landry Parish.
