Evangeline Bank reports phone scam targeting debit card users
Residents are being warned that automated telephone calls to individuals claiming their debit cards are no longer valid are nothing but part of a phishing scam.
Evangeline Bank reported they have received calls from customers claiming to have gotten these automated calls. Once the recording instructs the customer that their debit card is no longer valid, they are given the option to press the number one for more information. Upon pressing this number, the recording asks the customer to input their debit card number.
Phishing scams are an attempt to have customers willingly hand over this information so that it can be used illegally.
The American Bankers Association Education Foundation recommends never giving out your personal financial information in response to an unsolicited phone call, fax, or email, no matter how official it may seem. Your best response is simply no response. You should hang up the phone and contact the bank directly with inquiries. Remember, financial institutions will never contact you and ask you to give them this information.
