It was a solid first quarter that allowed the Mamou Demons to run past the Lakeside Warriors in an 84-73 win here Tuesday night.
With the victory Mamou moves on to the Class 2A quarterfinal game on Friday night. The Demons will now travel to Baton Rouge to take on the No. 1 seeded Madison Prep Chargers. The last time Mamou made it to the third round of the post-season was in 2010.
If there was any defining moment of the game, it would have to be the opening quarter. The Demons controlled the Warriors on both offense and defense as they took owned a 20-10 lead by the time the period had ended. Lil’ Paul Williams was the main reason why Mamou was so dominant in that quarter, scoring 10 of the Demon points.
The second period was a little more even in terms of points. Mamou hit two-three point baskets in the period. However, Lakeside was just as good offensively, knocking down a trio three-pointers of their own. By the time the dust settled in the stanza, the Demons had only created a two-point advantage and led 40-28 at the half.
It was much of the same in the third quarter. Both teams continued to pour in the points in the period. The Warriors wound up two points better in the stanza, but Mamou still led 59-49 as the buzzer sounded to end the quarter.
With the game on the line in the final quarter, the Warriors needed to continue producing offense and hopefully get a few defensive stops to crawl back into the game. But, the Demons stayed relentless on offense and finished the game with a 25-24 advantage in the fourth period to seal the win.
Four Mamou players scored in double digits, with Russell Edwards leading the way with 20 points. Williams added 19 points, while Tammrick Thomas and Tralon Arvie each netted 14 points.
