It was a perfect ending to a hard fought weekend for the Mamou Super 10 All-Stars, as they laid claim to the District 7 title on Wednesday evening.
Mamou battled their way to the winner’s bracket finals held on Tuesday and just needed one more win over a scrappy Ville Platte team to take the title home.
But, Ville Platte did not go away easily and defeated Mamou 3-1 to force an if necessary game the very next day.
Mamou was undeterred, as they battled their way to a 5-3 win, behind an exemplary pitching performance from Briggs Ardoin, and claimed the district championship.
“I am very proud of what these players accomplished,” stated Mamou head coach Jacob Berzas. “From day one we have had one goal and that is to win a state title. This is just one step forward in that direction. I just want to thank everyone from Mamou and the surrounding area for their support.”
Mamou began the tournament with a resounding 16-1 win over Westlake.
The all-stars received a small scare in game two, as Dequincy jumped out to a 4-0 lead over Mamou in the top of the fifth. However, Mamou scored six runs in the bottom of the inning to take the win.
Mamou then sent Ville Platte to the loser’s bracket with a 5-3 win over their cross-parish rivals in game three of the tournament.
An 18-3 win over Deridder sent Mamou into the winner’s bracket final and one win away from the title.
But, Ville Platte came to play in the very next game and defeated Mamou 3-1, to force another game between the two squads.
Mamou did not flinch in the final game, jumping ahead 5-1 after the third inning and held on for the win and the title.
“It was so nice to see the sportsmanship between us and Ville Platte,” stated Berzas. “I had not seen two teams get along like that in a long time. We are going to cover a lot of things to get ready for regionals. It will be just a matter of us cleaning up a few things.”
