During its regular monthly meeting Wednesday evening, Mayor Ricky Fontenot broached the idea of regulating the use of golf carts on the streets of Mamou, telling the Town Council he will have a final draft for their discussion at the October meeting.
According to Fontenot, he examined similar ordinances already in Kinder “and in a couple of other towns,” combining elements of them to come up with an ordinance for Mamou.
“The town does not advocate or endorse using golf carts,” Fontenot said. “But, because people are using them, they should be regulated.”
The term “golf cart” would apply to any electric or gas-powered vehicle capable of a maximum speed of 25 miles per hour.
The ordinance would allow licensed drivers to operate in the town limits, but not on state highways or rights of way.
Discussion Wednesday evening centered on whether or not a person seeking a permit would have to show proof that insurance has been paid on an annual basis or a quarterly basis.
Town Attorney Peter Savoy will examine Fontenot’s proposed language and report back to the council next month, at which time it will decide whether or not to adopt the ordinance.
