Mamou PD arrests man for stabbing local woman

On June 8, 2016 the Mamou Police Department responded to a home invasion that resulted in the stabbing of a female in front of her two juvenile children.
According to the MPD, Deandre Bellard, 21, went to a Mamou residence requesting to use the home owners phone. Mamou Police Chief Brent Zackery said that Bellard “pulled a knife out and forced his way into the home.”
While in the house, Zackery said, “Bellard and the victim got into a confrontation over a gun that the victim had.”
During the confrontation, Bellard stabbed the victim once in her upper thigh and in the side of her torso.
When Corporal Ethan Johns and Officer Dagan Soileau arrived on the scene, they were able to remove the victim from the home before working to apprehend Bellard, who had barricaded himself in one of the house’s rooms.
According to Zackery, “Bellard busted out a window in the front of the house, which is how he exited the home.”
Bellard then led officers on a foot pursuit, which came to an end near the 500 block of 8th Street in Mamou.
Zackery and Assistant Police Chief Phyllis Soileau arrested Bellard, and they were also able to recover the knife used in the stabbing as well as the $1,000 that Bellard had stolen from the victim.
Bellard was charged with attempted first degree murder, home invasion, criminal damage to property, two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting an officer, simple battery, and four counts of misrepresentation during booking. The Mamou man was transported to the Evangeline Parish Jail, which is where he remains on a $707,500.00 bond.
Zackery said, “I want to commend our officers for a job well done. I also want to thank Acadian Ambulance for transporting the victim to Lafayette so that her injuries could be seen about. She is now doing okay.”
