Mamou students receive D.A.R.E. certificates, T-shirts
Assistant Mamou Police Chief Katina Richard presented D.A.R.E. T-shirts and certificates to 176 fifth and sixth graders during ceremonies at the Mamou High gym the morning of Monday, May 19.
Three students in each grade received special gift bags for placing first in their classes in the D.A.R.E. essay contest. The fifth graders were Annemarie Bieber, Ashantia Weston and Christiny Giddens. The sixth graders were Akebra Weston, Brianna Thibodeaux and Kiya Serie.
Richard presented the students with a 10-week D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resostamce Education) program during the school year. She said the program stresses the twin problems of drug abuse and bullying.
One of the lessions is “Don’t be afraid” to tell “a trusted adult,” if the students see a problem. Richard said students learn about “the five Ws,” when contacting an adult regarding drug abuse or bullying: who, what, when, when and why.
