Mamou Mayor Ricky Fontenot recommended that the Town Council hold off on making any decisions regarding the updated Evangeline Parish Hazard Mitigation Plan.
During the town’s monthly meeting held on March 8, Fontenot stated, “I have talked to our Police Juror and we are not really ready to adopt a plan. My understanding from them is that they haven’t had the time to review it yet. We all want to make sure we are on the same page because we are all in this together.”
The council voted to table the resolution adopting the updated plan.
Fontenot assured the council that once the plan has been examined more thoroughly by the Police Jury and his office, that then he will share that information with the rest of the council.
“When I get more information then we will get back and share it with everyone,” Fontenot added.
Mamou Police Department Detective Joshua Uhlman informed the board during the meeting that the town’s Mardi Gras festivities did not result in a rash of issues for the police department.
“It went by smoothly we had no problems,” Uhlman said. “It went great.”
During the public comments period of the meeting, Uhlman also reassured a citizen concerning the department providing escort services for funerals.
The resident was worried that MPD would no longer provide such services, as Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office did for a brief time in 2016, but Uhlman told the concerned citizen that the service is something the MPD gladly still provides.
The next Mamou Town Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 12.
