Parish OEP presents hurricane preparedness program

The director of the Evangeline Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness, Liz Hill, discussed ways to ensure preparations are made in advance of this year’s hurricane season, which begins June 1, and runs through November. In the audience at the Mamou skating rink Wednesday, May 14, were emergency responders, including police and fire officials, local government officials, water board members and business and industry leaders from throughout the parish. One of the presenters at the annual event was Roger Erickson, with the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, who said his office expects a below normal amount of hurricanes. However, he cautioned that 1992 also was a below-normal season, but Hurricane Andrew came ashore in August of that year at Morgan City.
