Eddie Soileau, Sheriff of Evangeline Parish, has released a statement about a standoff in the Point Blue area that ended peacefully.
“A 23-year-old man has been taken into custody after a standoff with police officials which ended peacefully on Thursday morning, June 1, 2017,” the sheriff said in the statement.
“The Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office initially received a call in reference to a disturbance in progress at the address of 3685 Chataignier Road, Ville Platte,” the sheriff continued. “Officers arrived and learned of a white suspect that was armed and barricaded inside the residence. Local residents were immediately evacuated, roads were blocked, and a perimeter was set near and around the residence.”
In his statement the sheriff then conveyed what happened after the initial response from his deputies. “After several hours of negotiations and the subject refusing to cooperate and surrender, the sheriff’s office stood down for the night with the exception of a couple deputies that stood watch over the residence throughout the night,” said the sheriff.
“On Thursday, June 1, 2017, the Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office resumed negotiations with the subject,” the sheriff continued. “The subject later surrendered and was taken into custody safely. There were no injuries in the incident. The subject was immediately transported to the Mercy Regional Medical Center for a full medical evaluation.”
The sheriff in his statement wished to thank all of the law enforcement agencies who have assisted in this matter including the Louisiana State Police, Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, Ville Platte Police Department, Mamou Police Department, and Chataignier Police Department.
