Police jury proclaims honor for winning Mamou team
The Evangeline Parish Police Jury approved of a proclamation declaring August 11, 2014, Mamou Machine Pitch Dixie Youth World Champion Day.
The proclamation was at the top of the agenda for the police jury’s regular monthly meeting Monday, August 11. The meeting convened with the meeting room filled with coaches, parents, team members and their brothers and sisters.
The Mamou-eight year-old all-stars captured the Regional World Series on July 28, with a thrilling 15-14 victory over Minden. It was the sixth game for Mamou in three days.
The police jurors also passed a motion to accept a state offer to bring the parish’s hazard mitigation plan up to standards by the 2016 deadline. If the parish decided to assign the plan to a private company, the parish would have had to pay more than $11,000 in matching funds.
The director of the parish office of emergency preparedness, Liz Hill, briefed the jurors on the plan, which, if approved by FEMA, would make the parish eligible for hazard mitigation grants. One example was a $1 million grant used to “harden” -- mostly doors, windows and roofing -- the Northside Civic Center and other facilities that can be used for public shelters during a hurricane.
Hill said the priority planning areas include hurricbnes, flooding, tornados, drought and heavy thunderstorms capable of producing damaging lightning. She said earthquakes are also taken into account in the plans because of the proximity to a seismic fault line.
After the police jury heard a brief description of the background of Ville Platte City Court Judge candidate Juhlene Betsy Jackson, the jurors approved of several personnel reappointments that expire in June, 2018:
•Reappointment of J.D. Fontenot, John Bihm and Shane McGee to the Duralde Drainage District No. 4.
•Reappointment of Larry Broussard, Eugene Celestine and Kody Beiber to the Mamou Drainage District No. 5.
•Reappointment of Craig Pitre, Steve Mayeaux and Mitchell Benson to the Vidrine Drainage District No. 7.
•Reappointment of Dickie Parron, Larry Bieber and Gregory Perron to Mamou Drainage District No. 8.
