TURKEY CREEK – A Fourth of July party that took place last Friday at 1023 Cemetery Road in Turkey Creek ended in the fatal shooting of Clifton Hallmark, of Shreveport.
On July 1, 2016 at approximately 11:45 p.m. Evangeline Parish Sheriff Deputies were dispatched to Chapelle’s Grocery in Turkey Creek to respond to a possible homicide.
According to a press release from EPSO, when deputies and first responders arrived on the scene they “located an adult white male victim who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the side of his head, along with two white females.”
The affidavit prepared by Allen James, with the EPSO, states that the two females on the scene were Anissa Hallmark and Heather Tate.
When deputies arrived on the scene, Anissa was sitting inside of the vehicle on the driver’s side and “was very distraught to the point of nearing shock; shouting, ‘Please help him! Just Help Him,’” while Tate was on the outside of the vehicle on the driver’s side, and Clifton “was on the ground with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the right ear cavity.”
According to the affidavit, Anissa was “very distraught and unable to give any statement as to what took place,” but Tate, who “appeared very calm” was “able to speak very clearly and calmly.”
When asked to give a statement, Tate said, “They (Clifton and Anissa) were arguing when they left the party and they stopped right here” and “he (Clifton) walked to the back of the store to pee. Then we heard a gunshot and we ran back there and he said someone robbed him, so we called 911.” She also claimed that they had been at the store for 20 or 30 minutes.
After EPSO Sergeant Blade Bonnette spoke to Tate, Sgt. Bonnette “then walked to the back of the store, where the alleged robbery and shooting occurred.” The affidavit states that “upon thorough observation, Sgt. Bonnette noticed no signs of a struggle, no blood spatter from the victim being shot, as well as no aroma of a recent urination taking place in the area.” There were also no empty shell casing from a discharged firearm located in the area Tate had claimed the shooting transpired.
Due to the fact that there was no evidence that corroborated Tate’s story, Sgt. Bonnette returned to the front of the store to speak with Anissa.
The affidavit stated that when speaking with Anissa, Tate walked up and Anissa “became completely disoriented once again and was unable to give any statement at that moment.”
When the two ladies were separated, Sgt. Bonnette asked Anissa if she had seen who shot Clifton and she responded, “No, I couldn’t (expletive) see who shot him, but I know he shot him with some small (expletive) gun! Then they told me to get him in the (expletive) van and get him the (expletive) away from here and keep my (expletive) together. Then they told her (Tate) to come with us and for her to call 911 and say that he got robbed!”
EPSO Deputies then reviewed security footage from the Turkey Creek store, which showed the van arriving at approximately 11:45; the same time that the complaint was called in.
After the officers realized that Tate’s story had discrepancies, she became a suspect in this homicide.
Tate was given another opportunity to tell what really happened, and she said, “I can’t say, all I know is that he shot him across the street over there and they told me to come with her and tell 911 he got robbed. So that’s what I did and now here I am.”
When asked why her statements were inconsistent, Tate said, “I haven’t been meaning to lie to you, I’m just tired and haven’t slept.”
She then went on to state that she hadn’t slept because she “was using Crystal Meth a lot,” but claimed to “haven’t had any in like two days.”
When the recorded 911 call was reviewed, the affidavit states that “the voice of Heather Tate can be heard in the background stating, ‘We are going to tell them he got robbed Ok.’”
The distraught voice of Anissa was then heard, and then Tate, acting like Anissa, got on the phone and said, “My husband has been robbed and he was shot.”
A male subject by the name of Leland Hamm was also detained for questioning in this matter.
Also according to the affidavit, after further investigations were done, investigators wanted to question Elizabeth Auxilien of Mamou. The affidavit stated that, investigators “learned that multiple witnesses, that were at the party, admitted that Elizabeth Auxilien and her husband Michael Auxilien were at the party at the time of the shooting and she refused to tell what happened.”
Auxilien was arrested on July 5, 2016 and charged with accessory after the fact of second degree murder, and her arraignment has been set for August 11, 2016 in Judge Gary Ortego’s courtroom.
The EPSO is currently still investigating this crime.
