Town of Mamou to conduct natural gas leak survey
The Mamou Town Council voted to award R&R Consultants, LLP, to conduct a survey of natural gas leaks in the town’s distribution system.
Mayor Ricky Fontenot said he asked for, and received, a proposal from the company to perform the survey.
During an audit of the town, released in July and covering 2012, the auditing firm estimated losses in revenue due to leaks in the town’s gas distribution system could amount to more than $30,000 annually.
The mayor said “a bunch of leaks” had been detected and repaired this year. He has said the town has installed equipment earlier this year to monitor the town’s gas distribution system.
The only other issue during the short monthly meeting of the council on Wednesday, October 9, was a question from a citizen about whether the town would have a Christmas parade this year.
Elvin Reed said the town has had Christmas parades for about 25 years, but there were predictions early this year that because of economic problems, the town would not be able to fund the $1,500 needed for the parade this year.
Mayor Fontenot assured Reed that the $1,500 “is in the budget” this year. He also said the Christmas parade would be on Saturday, December 14, starting at 5:30 p.m. The parade was held on a Sunday last year.
The mayor also said the Veterans Day parade would take place on Monday, November 11, this year.
