Donald Trump has been elected as the 45th President of the United States.
Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in one of the most stunning upsets in modern election history as the real estate mogul and former reality television star won 289 electoral votes compared to Clinton’s 219. As of noon on Wednesday, no winners had been declared in the states of New Hampshire, Michigan and Minnesota but Trump had already surpassed the 270 to claim the presidency.
Clinton led the popular vote with 59,623,047 to 59,423,100.
The Republican nominee pulled off the historic win by successfully flipping states that had voted for Democrats in previous presidential elections like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, as well as taking battle ground states such as Florida, North Carolina and Ohio.
Trump pledged to bring the country together.
“I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans,” Trump said in his victory speech after the Associated Press called the race for him at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. “For those who have chosen not to support me in the past, of which there were a few people, I’m reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so we can work together and unify our great country.”
Trump will be the oldest president in U.S. history when he enters the Oval Office at age 70.
The Democratic nominee and former First Lady and Secretary of State meanwhile gave her concession speech on Wednesday morning.
“Last night, I congratulated Donald Trump and offered to work with him on behalf of our country. I hope that he will be a successful president for all Americans,” Clinton said. “Donald Trump is going to be our president. We owe him an open mind and a chance to lead.
“This is not the outcome that we wanted and we worked so hard for, and I am sorry that we did not win this election,” Clinton said.
