Turkey Creek renews arena lease for year
TURKEY CREEK - The Turkey Creek Village Council renewed the rodeo arena lease agreement for one year. Wesley King, who leased the arena last year, has agreed to renew the lease with the village and maintain the area. He plans on hosting a tractor pull on May 17, as well as other rodeo events for the residents of Turkey Creek. However, the roping chutes are expensive and he is trying to find some at a decent price. King stated the only repairs he did not complete were to the main building. He said he hopes to have the work done by the end of May. King and the council discussed moving the building closer to the manhole in order to hook it into the sewer system or leave the building where it is located and install its own sewer lift station. Both King and the council agreed to compare the costs and benefits of each location before deciding what to do. The council then voted to approve the renewal of the lease to King starting May 1, 2014 through April 30, 2015.
Police Chief Brad Wilson then addressed the council on the condition of the old police unit in the shop. He stated the motor on the 11-year-old vehicle is dying and “on its last legs.” He noted the electrical system also was shot and that metal shavings get into the oil and as a result the vehicle tends to overheat in the summer. He suggested donating the vehicle to the Evangeline Sheriff’s Office for parts or bring to auction. The council voted to table the issue and leave the vehicle parked until the issue is further discussed and a decision is made.
During the meeting, the council also:
•Heard from Tony Dupre, a candidate for district judge, Division A. He gave a brief overview of his qualifications and background, stating he has practiced civil and criminal law in state and federal courts throughout the state with 31 years of experience. He thanked the council for their time.
•Adopted a resolution proclaiming the month of April as National Fair Housing Month.
•Approved the minutes of the March 18, regular meeting.
•Approved expenditures for the month of March.
•Approved utility adjustments.
•Heard the financial report from Village Clerk Melissa Ferguson.
