Hillery Hill believes that people will enjoy listening to veterans telling old war stories at this Saturday’s 75th anniversary celebration of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Chapter 3803.
“People will really enjoy it because we have some old veterans,” Hill said. “They can tell some stories. They will love to do that.”
The local VFW chapter’s Post Guard will be one of dozens of veterans in attendance for the celebration which will be held at the Queen of All Saints Catholic Church Life Center, located at 1220 Dardeau Street in Ville Platte. The celebration will begin at 10 a.m. and continue until 1 p.m.
State Chaplin Richard Vidrine will be there to kick off the ceremony with an opening prayer and then continue with a blessing of the food. During the celebration, there will be a plaque presented to commemorate 75 years of existence for the VFW, Chapter 3803. The day will also be filled with guest speakers, lots of good food, and great conversation with our veterans.
Mrs. Camille Fontenot of the Ville Platte Chamber of Commerce, who is helping put on the event, said that the spectators will learn more about each veteran there in attendance.
“I will make sure we have all the veterans stand and tell us where they served, what era they served in, and where they were stationed,” Fontenot said.
The local chapter of the VFW started as a small group, meeting at a different veteran’s house each time before finally receiving its own building in Ville Platte in 1948. It is not the oldest chapter in the parish though, as that honor belongs to the Vidrine Aucoin was started in 1940.
