This weekend the City of Ville Platte began enforcing a long-standing city ordinance on curfew for minors.
The city ordinance, which dates back to 1980, states:
“It shall be unlawful for nay emancipated minor under the age of 17 years to travel, loiter, wander, stroll, or play in or upon or traverse any public streets, highways, roads, alleys, parks, places of amusement and entertainment, places and buildings, vacant lots or other unsupervised places in the City of Ville Platte, Louisiana, between the hours of 10 p.m. on any Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday night, and 5:00 a.m. of the following day, or 12:00 midnight on any Friday or Saturday night, and 5:00 a.m. of the following day.”
Violation of the curfew for the minor or the parent-guardian of the minor could result into a fine of not more than $200 or imprisoned for a period of not more than 30 days.
“It is for the safety of the children, the parents and the community and it is against the law,” Ville Platte mayor Jennifer Vidrine said. “So we are pleasing asking parents and grandparents to abide by the curfew.”
