It was a pretty decent start to the all-star season for the Ville Platte Dixie Super 10 all-stars, as they took home second place in the sub-district tournament held this past weekend in Pine Prairie.
The all-stars went 3-1 in the tournament, with their only loss to cross parish rival Mamou. Besides the one loss, head coach John Pitre was very enthusiastic about the play of his team.
“I thought we played very well this past weekend, I was pleased with the effort of the team,” said Pitre. “I was especially excited with our pitching. I really thought that was the highlight for us. We hit the ball decently and scored a lot of runs, but we didn’t hit as well as I would have liked. Our speed on the bases was a huge asset in us scoring runs.”
Against Vernon National the boys in blue did not take long to get the offense rolling, as Ville Platte tallied seven runs in the bottom of the first inning on their way to a 12-0 win.
Ville Platte did not score in the bottom of the second, but put the game away in the third inning, plating five more runs.
Another offensive explosion showcased Ville Platte’s win over Oakdale. The all-stars crossed six runs in the top of the first en route to a 16-1 win.
Ville Platte once again had trouble in the second inning, and were not able to put up any runs. However, the third and final inning was a long one for the Allen Parish all-stars, as Ville Platte batted around, scoring 10 runs.
Ville Platte ran into a buzz saw in their next game, as Mamou held the vaunted Ville Platte offense scoreless in a 6-0 win.
Mamou got on the board first bringing home three runs in the top of the first inning. Ville Platte managed to get a runner to second base in the bottom of the first, but Mamou put the clamps down defensively to keep the score in their favor.
Mamou did not score again until the sixth inning, plating three huge insurance runs. Ville Platte was not able to muster any offense in the final innings in order to overcome the deficit.
Another intra-parish match-up was on tap for the final game of the tournament, as Ville Platte squared off against Pine Prairie.
Ville Platte fired up the bats once again, as they subdued Pine Prairie 16-1.
“We are continuing to learn the game each day,” stated Pitre. “I give a lot of credit to my assistant coaches Brent Duplechin and Jason Deshotel for that. We are going to have to continue improving and keep putting the ball in play if we are to be successful the rest of the season.”
Ville Platte will now travel to Oberlin for the district tournament, which will begin on June 30.
