This week, we take a look back at September 1972.
• 13th Judicial District Court Judge Joe R. Vidrine announced his early retirement from the bench. In a news release, Vidrine said the Louisiana Supreme Court had accepted his request for disability retirement because of hearing problems.
• Connie Jo Rice of Prairieville, Miss Ascension Parish, Antheia Collins, of Ragley, and Roxane Marie Richard, of Gueydan, were contestants in the Cotton Queen Contest.
• Georgia Cappell, R.N., administered the Denver Development Test as part of the EPSDT testing program for young children at the Evangeline Parish Health Unit.
• Judge-elect Daniel J. McGee addressed the September meeting of the Evangeline Parish Legal Secretaries in the office of Attorney Preston Aucoin. Presenting the new judge to the group was Glenda Mitchell, president of the association.
• Robert Wayne Soileau, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Soileau of Ville Platte, was taking basic training at Ft. Polk.
• Airforce Staff Sgt. James E. Fulmer, husband of Mary Dupuis Fulmer of Ville Platte, arrived for duty at Ft. George G. Meade, Maryland. Dupuis-Fulmer is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Dupuis of Ville Platte.
• Monsignor Ed Fruge presented plaques of recognition to Mrs. Myrtle LeBas and W.R. “Red” Vallet for their service on the Sacred Heart School Board.
• Veronica Gail Fontenot, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Fontenot, and Dale Fusilier Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Fusilier Sr., married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
• Andrea Marie Fontenot, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Orise J. Fontenot of Ville Platte was engaged to marry Samuel Matthew Henderson of Oakdale.
• Mary Kathy Daigle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Daigle, was engaged to marry Joseph Randall Ortego.
• Pine Prairie Homemakers Club members Rebecca Whittington, Doris Robertson, Mennie Veillon, Monaco Deville, Hazel Veillon, Oberiz Fusilier, Agnes Leger and Ester Young displayed homemade items to be sold at the Louisiana Cotton Festival Country Store.
• Robert L. Olivier, author of the new novel, TIDOON, autographed copies of his book at Parkview Pharmacy in Ville Platte.
• Ville Platte High School Bulldog football player Mitch Rozas accounted for 67 yards in nine attempts in the Bulldogs’ game against the Winnsboro Wildcats.
• Sacred Heart High School Trojan football player Bobby Jones made six individual tackles in the school’s game against the Hanson Tigers.
• Coach Charles Tatman posed for a photograph with the backfielders of the the Sacred Heart Junior Varsity team. Players were Jeff David, Lyndon Soileau, Scott Soileau, Tim Vidrine and Billy Davenport.
• Gary Aucoin, an Evangeline Academy Rebel footbal player, scored the first touchdown during a game against Central of Baker.
• Cecil Gremillon of Abbeville, son of Mrs. R.G. Garland of Ville Platte, introduced a new breed of bullfrog to the waters of Chicot State Park.
• Movies opening that month: The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie; Cancel My Reservation; and Dracula A.D. 1972.
• Top song on Billboard Hot 100 — Baby Don’t Get Hooked On Me by Mac Davis.
