Louisiana consumers deserve the benefits competition can bring

History has proven that competition benefits the average consumer by lowering prices, improving customer service, sparking innovation and encouraging investment. The airline industry and the wireless telephone business are two good examples. The cable TV market should be no different, and Louisiana consumers have spoken loud and clear.

A recent poll found more than 70 percent of Louisiana consumers support bringing competition to the cable TV market. No surprise given the continuous increase in cable rates throughout Louisiana. In fact, cable rates in some areas of Louisiana have increased as much as 67 percent since 2000 and it is time to put a stop to it.

More than anything, competition gives consumers control and choice. In today’s world, consumers control the marketplace, and companies succeed or fail based on the value, service and innovation they deliver to customers. In states that have enabled competition, consumers have benefited from offers on discounted bundles and promotions for cable/video, local phone service, long-distance, Internet and wireless services. This is because if consumers don’t like their video provider, they can choose another one.

The benefits don’t just end with additional choice and competitive pricing. Competition would also usher in new technology and investment to Louisiana. In areas with real competition, companies are upgrading their networks to provide new and innovative services. Louisiana consumers deserve to have access to the latest technology and innovations in the video market.

States surrounding Louisiana and across the country are opening their markets and providing consumers the opportunity for these benefits. Now is the time to give Louisiana consumers what they want - more choices and increased competition. Without it, consumers will continue to endure rising cable rates.
