Mamou Council approves new dispatchers and stop sign locations

The Mamou Town Council held a special meeting Wednesday, April 16, to approve hiring two part-time dispatchers for the Mamou Police Department and discuss proposed locations for four-way stop signs.

Police Chief Greg Dupuis recommend the council approve the hiring of Durel Richard and Carleen Dick as part-time dispatchers. The council unanimously approved the recommendations.

The council also heard Dupuis’ recommendation for the placement of four-way stop signs. Dupuis said there have been complaints of speeders in several locations throughout town. He recommended the council approve turning the following intersections into four-way stops:

•Jolie Blonde and Birch streets

•Jolie Blonde and Walnut streets

•Balfa Brothers and Redwood streets

•Peach and Claiborne streets

•10th and Pecan streets

The council also approved removing the four-way stop signs at the intersection of Jolie Blonde and Walnut as there was not enough traffic to warrant the stop.

Dupuis also informed the council his department will be going over budget as repairs needed to be made. After a recent inspection by the fire marshal and health department, many repairs were required.

Dupuis added once the repairs are complete, the Mamou Jail will be able to house eight to 10 state inmates instead of the five it currently houses.
