Margarite “Ruby” Conner

Margarite “Ruby” Broussard Conner passed away peacefully, at home and surrounded by loved ones, on Friday, June 13, 2008 just after 5:00 in the evening.

Ruby was born to Gilbert and Dona Broussard in Abbeville, Louisiana on December 5, 1920, and lived a bold and vibrant life until the time came for her to move on. In her time on Earth, she traveled the country, fished its waters and made her home in a peaceful corner of Abbeville. She was a woman of the land, who tended several gardens and selflessly shared her life and home with hundreds of animals.

Ruby worked as a nurse at the Palms Hospital in Abbeville as a young woman, and spent her time as a caregiver not only to her family but to others in need as well. She was a teacher to her children, grandchildren, and to all who encountered her. She propagated unconditional love and laughter, and enriched the lives of countless others. Her home was one of acceptance and enjoyment, and she spread her “joie de vivre” to those she met.

As the matriarch of a large and tight-knit family, she was an unpredictable and refreshing woman. She conformed to no molds, and celebrated life as her genuine self. Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert and Dona Broussard; two brothers, James Ray and Dudley; father of her children, Wallace Guilbeaux; and her beloved husband, Wallace Conner.

Ruby is survived by two sisters, Ora “Teet” Landry and Annie Bell Parker; four children, Prentice James Guilbeaux, Helen Ann Broussard, Gloria Marie Bradberry and her husband Thomas, and Betty Ann Guilbeaux; twelve grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.

Feelings of gratitude and love go to Ruby’s dedicated caregivers, Ms. Farrell Lewis, Ms. Barbara Campbell and Ms. Bessie.

The compassion shown by these individuals will not go forgotten. Ruby’s family extends thanks to Hospice of Acadiana for kindly taking part in the last days of her life.

David Funeral Home of Abbeville will aid in arranging memorial services for Ruby.

A celebration of her cherished life will be held by her family and friends at a later date.
