Minister’s Corner: Don’t you think its time to ask

You know there are times we miss out on things simply because we do not ask. For example, I remember when I was working for a large oil construction company and flying extensively around the world. I always flew coach because it was much cheaper. But one time I remember boarding the plane and seeing a number of empty seats in first class. We had a long flight and I thought it would be nice to have a little more room and a little more peace and quiet. I thought it, but I didn’t do anything about it. Meanwhile, there was a man sitting across the aisle from me that stopped the flight attendant and asked her if he could have a free upgrade to first class. She said yes and he immediately moved. Now I knew there were still some empty seats in first class, but I hesitated to ask the flight attendant for fear she would say something to the effect of, “Just because I did it for him doesn’t mean I will do it for you. Stay put.” So, I didn’t ask. It definitely was my loss.

Often times, we have not because we ask not. The book of James says that in James 4:2. That was certainly true in my case that day and it is true in many of our lives, day in and day out. We do not have because we do not ask. What if blind Bartimaeus had not asked? But the fact of the matter is he did ask. It demonstrated faith on his part, and as a result, Jesus healed him. Simply asking is in itself an act of faith. Don’t you think it’s time to ask?
