Minister’s Corner: Tearing down the walls of Jericho

In Joshua, chapter six, we find Jericho was the first city Israel came to after they crossed the Jorden River on their way to the promised land. It was the gateway to Cannan, but it presented an obstacle for it was a heavily fortified city with massive walls that appeared to be impenetrable. It was a stronghold. But, God, who deals in the realm of the impossible, brought the walls crashing down.

Israel was given a set of instructions to follow by God in order to see the city fall. The obedience of Israel to follow those instructions and see this obstacle, Jericho, destroyed was an act of faith. Hebrews 11:30 says, “By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days.”

We have strongholds in our lives that hold us back from appropriating the promises of God. They include the wall of sin, the wall of unbelief, the wall of doubt, the wall of slavery to other things, the wall of rejection, the wall of apathy, and the list goes on. But those strongholds, those walls, come down when by faith we obey God’s word.
