Names submitted for donkey

By Howell Dennis

CROWLEY – Four days ago this picture of a donkey ran on the front page of the paper under the headline “Give me a name please!”. Little did we know the response we would get. Nine people called in and suggested various names ranging from Hee-Haw to Saban. Another person mailed in an anonymous letter with six different suggestions along with the origin for each name. Other names submitted included Buddy, Shamus, Carrot, and the favorites of everybody at the Post Signal - Harold and Milo.

Now when I first got to work Friday morning I was unaware that the picture I took Thursday morning had run with the aforementioned headline. When the first person called me to suggest a name I thought she had to be kidding. Biting my tongue to keep from laughing, I went to tell my coworkers - “Someone just called wanting to name the donkey!”. The joke was on me when I got the reply “We know Howie, that was the fourth caller!’.

Now I’m not sure if Doug Keaton, the owner of the donkey who let me take its picture, received the same amount of calls as we did but I would like to speak with him to see if it was O.K. with him if we awarded his donkey a name. Mr. Keaton’s number isn’t listed so if he sees this please give us a call and we’ll run the names by him. The choice will be made by Mr. Keaton, after all, it’s his donkey.
