Tyler Rodriguez threw a perfect game for the St. Edmund Blue Jays Tuesday night, allowing the team to swoop to a 23-run, five-inning shutout against the St. Joseph Eagles of Plaucheville.

Rodriguez struck out nine batters, while allowing no hits, runs or walks.

“We played good defense whenever they put it in play. I thought we hit the ball really well,” Blue Jay head coach Tré Brown said.

After Rodriguez struck out the first three Eagle batters, the Blue Jays racked up 12 runs in the second half of the first inning.

Jeff Fontenot opened up scoring with a 2-RBI single after the Jays loaded the bases with two singles and a walk.

Later in the inning, Fontenot put on a repeat performance for two more runs.

Fontenot went three-for-three in the contest, contributing a total of 5 RBI.

The Jays had loaded the bases again with two outs when Trevor Hargroder tripled for 3 RBI before Eagle pitcher Kerry Guillot was able to shut the door on the Jays.

The Jays added eight runs in the bottom of the second inning, with Rodriguez batting in two runs on a base hit.

The Jays added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

“We scored (23) runs, but I’m more impressed with the way we got in there at the bat.

“It was around the zone, and sometimes in the zone, and we just stayed in there and saw the ball well and hit the ball up the middle well,” Brown commented afterwards.

With a 4-0 district record (14-11 overall), the Blue Jays lead 6-1A, but they still have three district games remaining, including a rematch against the second-place Green Hornets from Catholic High of Pointe Coupee (13-5, 3-1) today.

“It should be a tough game,” Brown said, “but if we can swing the bat, we should be alright.”
