Mamou Junior High celebrates library week with several activities

MAMOU - Mamou High School Junior High Library celebrated National Library Week with several activities this year.

On April 16, several members of the Mamou community participated in the Community Read-In event. The fifth grade students were entertained by community leaders who read various books to the students. Community leaders included Bruce Rozas, magistrate for Mamou; Wilda Chamberlain, mayor; Flo Deshotel and Charles Patrick Hall and Katina Richard, DARE officer and assistant chief for the Mamou Police Department, respectively. Each student was given a new book, key ring, bookmark and pencil for participating in the program.

On Saturday, April 19, the Mamou Junior High Library hosted Books and Breakfast. Prior to the event, parents and students were invited to read the 2001 Newbery Winner “A Year Down Yonder” by Richard Peck.

On the day of the event, parents and students enjoyed breakfast and discussions on the novel. Following the discussions, parents and students took part in a scavenger hunt and created bookmarks and notes for each other. They also took Accelerated Reader tests and visited the book fair.

Also, as part of National Library Week, each student, in grades six to eight, were given a free copy of a current novel.

Mamou High School would like to thank all parents and students who came out to celebrate the importance of reading.
