Alfred, Nelson get high marks at state

The Ville Platte High School Track teams wrapped a very successful season. The boys and girls teams had representatives at every level including district, regional and state. At the state event in Baton Rouge, two boys placed in the top of their event. Hansoni Alfred won the javelin throw with a hurl of 17.10 feet. Ralensee Nelson was the state runner-up in the long jump.

At district, the boys were the runner-up and the girls placed second. The boys racked up 104 points overall. Jerry Joseph placed first in the 100-meter dash, the long jump and the triple jump. Nelson took second in the long jump and the high jump. He was third in the triple jump event. Hansoni Alfred placed second in the shot put and javelin throw. Paul Lavigne was the third place finisher in the shot put. Lavigne also took a second place slot in the discus throw. The boys 4-by-100-meter relay team was the runner-up.

The girls racked up 95 points in district. Megan Moore took second in the 100-meter dash and third in the 200-meter dash. Breanna O’Conner placed second in the 800-meter run and the high jump. She also earned a third place spot in the one mile run. Deshea Arvie placed third in the one mile and two mile runs. Lacy Thomas was tied for third place in the 100-meter hurdles and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles. Laqueda Thomas won the discus throw and took second in the shot put. The VPHS ladies placed second in the 4-by-100-meter run and third in the 4-by-200-meter run.

At the regional event at ULL, the VPHS boys finished in a fifth place tie with St. John. The two groups each put up 37 points. Alfred took third place in the shot put and first in the javelin. Nelson was the winner in the long jump and the high jump. Alfred was named the Outstanding Field Person at the event.

The VPHS girls also took fifth with 46 points. Breanna O’Conner placed second in the 800-meter run and third in the one mile run. Deshea Arvie was third in the two mile run and fourth in the one mile run. Laqueda Thomas was the runner-up in the discus throw and she placed third in the shot put.

Several track and field starts competed at the Class 2A State Meet at Bernie Moore Stadium in Baton Rouge. Alfred won the javelin throw and placed sixth in the shot put. Nelson was the second place guy in the long jump. In the girl’s events, Thomas placed fifth in the shot put and the discus throw. O’Conner came out in the eighth slot in the one mile run and fifth in the 800-meter run. Arvie collected a seventh place finish in the two-mile run.
