Three charged in burglary

An investigation on Monday led to arrest warrants being issued for three young men, including one sheriff’s detectives’ step-son.

Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Captain Keith Dupre, chief of detectives, said an investigation Monday led him to recover lap tops and discover three people responsible for breaking into the Dollar Store near Pine Prairie.

“I received information my step-son, Garrett Patrick Berzas, 18, 1306 Elm Street, Pine Prairie, knew about a laptop computer stolen from a teacher. At that time, we believed it had been stolen from St. Landry Parish.”

Dupre’s investigation led him to discover a computer had been sold to a neighbor of his family’s in Pine Prairie. He was able to recover the laptop, and as a result of the investigation, two arrest warrants were issued for Ryan Kordish, 19, 1038 Gas St., Ville Platte, and Logan McKenzie Swift, 18, 1026 Cedar Lane, Turkey Creek. Both will be charged with one count of burglary and one count of theft for the theft of a laptop from Pine Prairie High School January 7, of this year.

Through the investigation, Dupre said it was determined his step son, along with Kordish and Swift, were responsible for break-ins at the Dollar Store, outside Pine Prairie, which occurred July 15, 2007, and November 1, 2007.

Berzas was booked into the parish jail on two counts of theft and two counts of burglary. He was released on a $15,000 bond. Dupre is waiting for the arrest of Kordish and Swift, who will now be facing three counts of burglary and three counts of theft each. Their bonds have been set at $20,000.
