Vernon Lee Johnson Sr.

HAMMOND - Funeral services were held for Vernon Lee Johnson Sr., 82, of Hammond, at the Harry McNeely and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Hammond at 11 a.m., Tuesday, November 12. Burial followed in the Holly Gardens Cemetery.
A native of Mamou, Mr. Johnson died Saturday, November 9, 2013, at the Richard Murphy Hospice House in Hammond. He served in the United States Air Force and was retired from State Farm Insurance after 31 years as an insurance agent. He was a graduate of University of Louisiana at Lafayette (Southwestern Louisiana) and obtained his Masters +30 from Louisiana State University. He also taught and coached at Ponchatoula for 13 years.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Dorothy “Dottie” Johnson; four children, Byron Douglas Johnson, Glenn Lee Johnson, Vernon Lee Johnson Jr. and Gaye Marie Johnson Dykes; two step-children, Denise Owens and Stephen LeJeune; 13 grandchildren, Michael Johnson, Steven Johnson, Jennifer Johnson, Kyle Johnson, Katie Johnson, Ally Johnson Lawhon, Cooper Johnson, Matthew Johnson, Vernon Lee Johnson III, Brock Johnson, Kennedy Johnson, Brittany Dykes and Ashlynn Dykes; three step-grandchildren, Angela Daniel, Trey Owens and Tyler Owens; two great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Barbara Duplessis.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gayle Pierrotti Johnson; his parents, William “Riley” Johnson and Rena Fontenot Johnson; and one sister, Lois Jean Johnson.

Rev. Joe Donakey officiated and Deacon Roger Navarra gave the eulogy.
