Lady Trojans earn league win over SEH
With the arctic blasts affecting schools and sports recently, local schools had to do what they could in order to keep their district schedules on track. At Sacred Heart, it was no exception. SHHS Head Coach Stephanie Fontenot and her resilient band of warriors hosted St. Ed’s Thursday night. The game was originally slated for Tuesday but had to be moved due to the weather.
The Lady Trojans of Sacred Heart improved to a positive record of 3-1 in District 5-1A competition. They glided by the St. Edmund’s Lady Blue Jays 62-50 in front of the Sacred Heart Lady Trojans’ home crowd.
The contest began slowly with little offense as both teams simply tried themselves out. A swift basket exchange led the Lady Blue Jays taking an 8-6 lead after the first period. Catherine Poche paced the Lady Trojans with three points in the period.
Despite the slow start, it was the second period that really put the Lady Trojans way out in front. The SHHS girls rained down 20 points on offense and stood firm on defense. They held SEH to just eight points for the period and took a 26-16 lead into the locker room. While Poche and Courtney Cloud were big on defense, Natalie Earles rained down eight points. She hit three straight jump shots and then finished off with a pair of free throws. Heather Johnson lit up the long distance shooting with a three-point bomb and later hit a layup off of a turnover. The Lady Trojans had gathered a lot of momentum going into the half and it had the home crowd excited.
The third period featured nothing less than a shoot-out. Johnson rained a quartet of three-point shots on the Lady Blue Jays and added a pair of free throws. She would end the night with a team high of 23 points.
St. Ed’s answered back with 17 points. Madelyn Andrus was big with six points in the frame and Sydney Thibodeaux banked four points.
The final period saw the Lady Trojans up 44-33. In the final period, Sacred Heart and St. Ed’s remained in the shoot-out. The two teams combined for 34 points, with SHHS hitting 18 points.
Earles caught fire and hit seven points. She completed her night with 15 points overall. The home team kept the visitors off guard and did just enough to keep them behind. Gabbie Andrepont made several steals in the game, which frustrated the visiting team.
Poche finished the night with 10 points and she led the team in rebounds. It was a stellar night overall for the home team as they improved in league play.
Sacred Heart will head to False River tomorrow night to take on the Lady Gators for another District 5-1A contest.
