Large attendance expected at chamber meeting February 24

The next meeting of the Ville Platte Chamber of Commerce, which will be Monday, February 24, because Monday, February 17, is Presidents Day, is expected to be larger than usual because of the issue that will be taken up: What will happen to the Coreil Campus of the Southeast Louisiana Community College system.
Because of the larger group, the meeting will be held at Nick’s on Main instead of the chamber’s usual meeting location, LaVielle Banque.
Chamber Director Camille Fontenot said a number of people have been invited to the meeting, including state Senator Eric LaFleur and state Representaive Bernard LaBas. Dr. David Volpe, SLCC vice chancellor of student affairs, is scheduled to speak at the meeting.
Fontenot said she learned of interest in the question of the Coreil facility’s future during a recent Ville Platte Rotary Club meeting and said Rotarians will be at the meeting on February 24. She also informed area television stations about the meeting.
Fontenot stated in a recent letter to the editor in The Gazette that she is concerned the Coreil Campus “is facing possible closure in the near future.” She said the public and business people “are very concerned,” about that possibility.
Fontenot recently wrote a letter to chamber members urging them to write to the governor or to high government or educational officials and to contact students and instructors at the Coreil Campus to find out if they know anything about its future.
