EPSB honors students of the year

The Evangeline Parish School Board honored students of the year during its meeting Wednesday, April 16.
Students were nominated for the student of the year honors in fifth grade, eighth grade and high school divisions. Supervisor Linda Lafleur, who presented the students with certificates and plaques during the meeting, said selecting winners was difficult because all the students were such hard workers in the classroom. However, earning student of the year in the fifth grade division was Kamryn West of Bayou Chicot Elementary. In the eighth grade division, Cameron Bergeaux of Basile High School earned student of the year honors. And finally, in the high school division, Elizabeth Ortego of Basile High School earned student of the year honors.
In other business, the board:
•Approved a new school calendar for the 2014-2015 school year, which will allow for three vacation days during Mardi Gras week.
•Learned from Superintendent Toni Hamlin that while there were some glitches during end of year testing, it has been completed and they will be presenting the results when those scores are received. She also stated that every high school has shown improvement in ACT testing.
•Recognized the Bayou Chicot Elementary track team, who placed first in the Evangeline Parish Track Meet.
