Heritage Manor News: Challenges of Alzheimer’s Disease

After hearing the devastating news of a loved one being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, we begin our life-altering events. Suddenly, you could be in a position of being the caretaker and your relationship with your loved one, whether it is a spouse, parent or sibling, takes a whole new turn in your life. Providing care or just supervision can have a large amount of issues, such as behavioral or health concerns. Depending on the stage of the disease, this will vary. There are usually verbal outbursts, repetitive motions and sometimes even physical aggression. Poor behavior can be caused by pain, lack of sleep, hunger, thirst or feelings of being lost. Keep in mind that their actions are not intentional. If the reason for the behavior can be determined, you can often reduce or eliminate it by addressing it and dealing with it in a calm way. Avoid crowds and noise. Alzheimers patients can be overwhelmed by this and get more confused. Caring for someone with Alzheimers can be challenging but can also be very rewarding. Join a local support group and get educated in order to have and give the best quality of life for both of you.
