April 7, 1929 - June 25, 2014
MAMOU - Funeral services will be held for Florence McGee Fontenot, 85, of Lafayette, at the Ardoin’s Funeral Home Chapel in Mamou at 11 a.m., Friday, June 27. Burial will follow in the New St. Ann’s Cemetery.
A loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother sister and friend, Ms. Fontenot died Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at her daughter’s residence. She was quite the character! She loved God and she loved her children and everyone she knew “with all her heart.” She was “not a McGee for nothing.” She followed her husband on their new venture to Leesville in 1967. She raised her children there and supported her husband in all he did. They traveled together to many beautiful places, not to mention the summer vacations shared by all! Her family was her everything, traveling to Eunice once a week to have lunch with her parents and have afternoon coffee with them and anyone else who happened to stop by. She was so very proud of her heritage and the fact that her daddy was a Cajun fiddle player. She also loved to play her accordion. Flo and Dee won many dance contests together, dancing to the music they loved.
Survivors include six children, Elvin C. Fontenot Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of Leesville, Dene’ Villarreal and her husband, Drew, Carolyn Gravette and her husband, Tim, and Beverly Stevens and her husband, Reddick, all of Lafayette, Kathy Guillot and her husband, Conroy, of Houma and Greg Fontenot and his wife, Renessa, of Baton Rouge; two sisters, Jane and Grace; and four brothers, Gerry, Billy, Donnie and Tommy. She was further blessed with 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. They were the absolute light of her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elvin C. (Dee) Fontenot Sr.; and her parents, Dennis and Gladys McGee.
Pall bearers were Zachary Gravette, Michael Freeman, Elvin C. Fontenot III, Coan Stevens, Matt Conn and Casey George. Honorary pall bearer was Andrew Villarreal.
