Trojans fall to Eagles in Kiwana’s Jamboree
The first test for the Trojans in 2014 turned out to be a tough one as they fell to Central Catholic of Morgan City 14-0 Friday night at the Kiwana’s Jamboree. The game was played at Teurlings High School. The Trojan offense was derailed by costly penalties that killed drives throughout the game.
Sacred Heart’s first drive of the night stalled after 17 yards and seven plays. Junior running back Garrick Fontenot carried the load on the first series, gaining 16 yards on three carries. An incomplete pass on third and eight forced the Trojans to punt.
Sacred Heart’s defense came ready to play on Central Catholic’s first drive. The Trojans front eight shut down the Eagles’ spread offense early. Central Catholic could only manage 21 yards on seven plays.
Sacred Heart’s next possession resulted in a Phillip Vidrine interception. The Eagles took advantage of good field position following the interception and scored their first touchdown of the game on a three-yard touchdown run by Travis Travon with 1:11 left in the first half. The extra point was good and the Eagles led 7-0.
The Trojans came out strong to start the second half, but a poor snap on the punt gave Central Catholic the ball on the Sacred Heart 28 yard line. Two plays later, Travon punched in another Eagle score from 23 yards out with 8:26 left in the second half. The extra point was good and Central Catholic took a 14-0 lead over Sacred Heart.
The Trojans responded with a long drive. Sacred Heart’s possession began at their own 22 yard line. The Trojans managed to pick up three first downs on the drive. With the ball at the Eagle 31 yard line, Sacred Heart faced a fourth and 10. Vidrine dropped back to pass and threw his second interception of the night, thus ending the Trojan drive.
Central Catholic took over at their own 12 yard line and never gave Sacred Heart another opportunity to regain possession as they ran the clock out. On the night, Sacred Heart’s offense totaled 57 yards on 31 plays. Leading the Trojan offense was Fontenot, who carried the ball 10 times for 45 yards. For his effort, he was named MVP for the Trojans in the contest.
After the game, Sacred Heart Head Coach Gary Adkins was pleased with the overall effort in the second half. “I really think that our players came out in the second half ready to play. Penalties and turnovers cost us momentum on important drives throughout the game. We need to do a better job of not killing ourselves offensively.”
Sacred Heart will host the Basile Bearcats on Friday night at Soileau-Landry field in a non-district opener for both teams. This game will be a real test for both schools and will gauge how each team has progressed since the scrimmage.
