Ville Platte Rotary Club welcomes recent guests
September 2, Meeting
During the September 2, meeting of the Ville Platte Rotary Club, members heard from Chris “Rocket” Paul with Louisiana Championship Wrestling and Thomas Scully, director of the Ville Platte Recreational Park.
Paul was the guest of Mayor Jennifer Vidrine and invited the community to support the wrestling event Saturday evening, September 6, at the Ville Platte High School gymnasium. Paul noted the event will raise money for the future Boys and Girls Club in Ville Platte and will feature seven matches, including three championship bouts. The Two Non-Blondes from KVPI (Jennifer Meylian and Stephanie Ware) will be the special guest announcers. The event will begin at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m. Advanced admission tickets are $15 for ringside seats and $10 for general admission seats and available at city hall. Tickets at the door are $20 for ringside seats and $15 for general admission seats.
Scully gave an update on the ball season and park, noting the youth leagues represented Ville Platte well in the various tournaments. He stated the Ville Platte eight year old and under girls all star team placed second in the National Pony League Tournament in Youngsville. He said the boys pitching machine team went to district competition and the t-ball team placed second in district and receive the sportsmanship award. He added the 10-year-old all-star team lost the state tournament and the 12-year-old all stars won regionals and state and then finished fourth in the Dixie Youth World Series in Lexington, South Carolina.
Scully emphasized the new Ville Platte complex was built with a state grant obtained with the assistance of Representative Bernard LeBas and Senator Eric LaFleur,without placing an additional tax burden on local residents. He noted the main source of revenue generating for the facility is to host tournaments there and bring people into the community. He said as much as $430,000 could be brought into the community through a 20-team tournament.He closed by emphasizing that the main goal of the park board is to take care of the teams and families that visit Ville Platte and treat them with great hospitality.
