Heritage Manor News: Happy Grandparent’s Day!

In 1970, a housewife from West Virginia initiated a campaign to set aside a special day for grandparents. Marian McQuade was mother of 15 and grandmother of 40. Her primary motivation was toward the elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to get wisdom from their grandparents, wisdom that only they could provide. The first Grandparent’s Day celebration was held in 1973 and proclaimed by West Virginia Governor Arch Moore. In 1978, five years after its beginning, the U.S. Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparent’s Day. This legislation was signed by President Jimmy Carter. September was chosen for the holiday to signify the “autumn years” of life. Please remember to call or visit your grandparents today.
