Bearcats take 4-0 record on road against Warriors

The Basile Bearcats have won four games in a row, with the offense being up and down throughout the course of every game. The one part of Basile’s football squad that has really played consistently all year has been the defense. The Bearcats have pretty much dominated their opponents so far this season. They will need that defense to continue their steady play as they travel to Lake Charles on Friday to take on the Hamilton Christian Warriors. The district contest is set for 7 p.m.
Take, for example, two weeks ago against a very potent St. Ed’s offense. The Bearcat defenders held one of the best running quarterbacks in the area, Drew Brown, to a negative five yards rushing. This past week, the Basile defense was on point again as it stymied Merryville, holding the Panthers to a paltry 23 yards of total offense.
“Our defense has been outstanding all year long,” said Basile Head Football Coach Kevin Bertrand. “When our offense is struggling to get things going, it’s nice to know that your defense will keep you in the ball game. Defensively, our motto all year has been to bend but don’t break. The coaching staff has done a tremendous job each week game planning and getting the kids ready to play on defense.”
Even though the offense has struggled at times in games this year, when it gets going, it really gets going.
Against Merryville, the Bearcat offense sputtered in the first quarter. However, from the second quarter on it was a very dominating performance, especially the running game. Basile piled up 397 yards of offense, 262 of those yards came via the ground game. Gabriel Fontenot was the workhorse against the Panthers, gaining 131 yards on 22 carries. He even threw a pass for 32 yards.
“I am proud of how our offense does not get rattled, especially when we are not moving the ball as well as we would like. Our offensive line grinds and grinds and eventually starts to take control. They are constantly working to make things happen. We have a veteran quarterback that understands the game and we have two backs that complement each other so well.”
Basile will definitely need both aspects of their game to be on target going into the game against Hamilton Christian. The Warriors come into the game sporting a 3-1 record. They have victories over Lake Arthur (20-6), Lafayette Christian (26-13) and South Cameron (39-7). Their only loss came against St. Mary’s by a score of 16-8. Travelling should not be an issue for the veteran Bearcats, as they have been on the road twice already this season. This game is huge in terms of power points and district standings. Each team would love to be 2-0 in district at the end of this contest. If the Bearcats get the same performance from their defense that they have had so far this season, it may be a long night for the Warriors.
