Bulldogs take it on the chin in loss to Comets

The Comets of St. Charles Catholic traveled to Ville Platte Friday night to take on an injured Bulldog team at the Dog House. Ville Platte would not be able to overcome their injuries and the Comets would shut them out with a 49-0 victory.
St. Charles won the coin toss and deferred the ball to the second half. Ville Platte would get the ball first at their 27 yard line. The Bulldogs’ Terez Alfred would hit Justin Ardoin for a four-yard completion on the second down. The next play, Alfred would get sacked, forcing Ville Platte to punt.
The Comets then took over at the Bulldog 35 yard line. St. Charles would find the end zone four plays later, led by Austin Weber, who would score from eight yards. The extra point by Andrew Rodrigue would be good, giving the Comets an early 7-0 lead with 9:15 to play in the first quarter.
Ville Platte would take the kickoff to their 20 yard line. Four running plays by Alfred for 28 yards would give the Bulldogs some momentum. Two incomplete passes and a run by Alfred for two yards would force the Bulldogs to punt. On the punt, Ville Platte’s punter, Dayton Jackson, would drop the snap and the Comets would take him for a 10-yard loss.
The Bulldogs defense would force St. Charles to turn the ball over on downs. After a quick three and out by Ville Platte, the ball would be returned to the Comets at the Bulldogs 48 yard line.
The first play of the drive, quarterback Austin Weber would take the ball to the end zone for a 48-yard touchdown run. The extra point would be good and the Comets would widen their lead to 14-0 with 4:05 left to play in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs would start the next drive at the 38 yard line. Daylon Jones would take the handoff for 10 yards and a Bulldog first down. Alfred would then run the next two plays for zero yards, forcing a third and long incomplete pass. Ville Platte would then have to punt.
The Comets would put together a 10-play drive for 58 yards led by Tahj Smith. Smith had five carries for 34 yards. With the ball at the five yard line, Evan Mitchell would find pay dirt, giving St. Charles a 21-0 lead with 9:40 to play in the first half.
On the kickoff, Ville Platte would get penalized for a block in back, forcing them to start at their 12 yard line. Alfred’s pass on the first play would be deflected and intercepted by Jaclon Gordon. The Comets would have a short field, taking over at the Bulldogs’ eight yard line.
Ville Platte’s defense would stand strong, forcing a fourth and 12. St. Charles would then bring out their field goal unit. On the snap, the Bulldogs were surprised with a fake field goal. Weber found Zach Maurin in the end zone for a Comet touchdown pass with 8:29 to play in the second quarter. St. Charles would then have a commanding lead over Ville Platte with a score of 28-0.
Ville Platte would start the drive at their 45 yard line after Oxzabein Serie returned the kickoff 35 yards. On second down, Alfred would find Shabby Charles for an eight-yard pass. On fourth and two, Terese Thomas would take the ball around the right side of the field for 14 yards and what should have been a first down. Ville Platte would get penalized on the play for an illegal shift. The Bulldogs would then turn the ball over on downs.
The Comets took over at their 32 yard line. Five plays later, St. Charles found the end zone again, giving them a huge 35-0 lead with 3:55 left till halftime.
Ville Platte would be forced to go three and out for negative yards on their next drive. The Comet’s Eric Lewis would take the punt 40 yards before a Bulldog would tackle him at the five yard line. Two plays later, Patrick Ratliff would take the snap for five yards and another Comet touchdown.
The Second half would give some rest to the starters for both teams, and give the non-starters game experience. St. Charles would take their first series eight plays for 10 yards, which included two Comet personal foul penalties. After both teams traded punts, St. Charles would take over at their 46 yard line. Tahj Smith would lead the Comets with three carries for 42 yards and a touchdown. St. Charles would now have a 49-0 lead over Ville Platte with 1:09 left in the third quarter.
Ville Platte would take over at their 36 yard line. The Bulldogs would put an impressive drive together that included 12 plays for 44 yards. Quan Fontenot would lead the drive with five carries for 28 yards. Both teams would then trade punts to end the game.
For the game, Ville Platte was led offensively by Terez Alfred. Alfred ran the ball 12 times for 48 yards. He also completed two of 16 pass attempts for 12 yards.
Coach Jorie Randle said, it was a good experience for his team tonight. They will now turn their focus to the district.
The Bulldogs (1-4) will now try to pull out a Homecoming win Friday night against Port Barre Red Devils. Port Barre is 2-3 on the year, losing Friday night to Delcambre 35-14.
