Trojans host Hornets in district game

The Sacred Heart Trojans are starting to feel that things are coming together as they have won their last two ball games in decisive fashion. This past Friday the Trojan defense flexed its muscles and shut down the False River Gators inside their five yard line on three separate occasions. That gave the offense the opportunity to break out of a slight funk and pull away for the 28-8 win. Sacred Heart will now host an intriguing Catholic of Pointe Coupee ball club in a vital district 5-1A game. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
Against False River, the Trojan defense used a bend but don’t break mentality. False River managed togain 217 total yards of offense against Sacred Heart. However, the Trojans built a brick wall and stuffed the Gator offense three times when it looked like False River had the momentum. On top of the three goal line stands, the Sacred Heart defense forced three Gator turnovers.
“I was really proud of our defensive performance,” said Sacred Heart Head Coach Gary Adkins. “You don’t see three goal line stands in one game too often. I don’t know if we came out ready to play in the first half, but we talked to the players at half time and went out in the second half and got it done. The defense was able to hold on until our offense could get going.”
Offensively, the Trojans used the legs of Mikey Laughlin and Dylan Scully to run away from False River in the second half. Laughlin carried the ball for 155 yards on the night. Scully added another 124 yards of rushing. All together the Trojans collected 355 yards of total offense. Seth Shipp was the recipient of the lone completed pass from Joshua Lahaye. That pass went for 22 yards.
“Our offensive line did a really good job against False River,” said Adkins. “We had two backs rush for over 100 yards. It’s nice when as an offense you can do that. It was really cool to see them play hard for 48 minutes.”
Sacred Heart will now face the Catholic of Pointe Coupee Hornets in an ever important district 5-1A contest. The Hornets come into the game 2-4 on the season and 0-1 in district play. Catholic’s four losses have come against teams with a combined record of 22-6. A win for the Trojans would continue to solidify their chances of becoming part of the elite 16 that will make up the LHSAA Division IV playoffs.
“They throw the ball a lot more than any team we have faced this year,” explained Adkins. “Their quarterback slings it pretty good. We will have to play a lot of seven on seven this week to get ready for their passing game. On defense, they have some studs at linebacker and nose guard. Catholic is a good football team. I have confidence that we will have a good game plan and our guys will execute that game plan.”
