Demons outgunned by Lions in district contest

The Mamou Demons took their 1-6 record on the road to Vinton High School in hopes of adding a second win of the season. It was not to be for Mamou, as the Lions amassed 512 total yards on offense in a 40-19 victory. The loss now puts the Demon record at 1-7 overall and 0-3 in district.
The Lions were the first team to put up points in the contest. A 61 yard touchdown pass gave the Lions the early 6-0 lead. The extra point was good and Vinton held a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
Mamou would answer back in the period. Matching the long play of the Lions, quarterback Dylan Duplechin connected on a 57 yard touchdown pass to Daniel Matthews. Nathaniel Holland tacked on the extra point. The first quarter came to an end with the score tied 7-7.
The second quarter opened with a nine yard rushing touchdown by the Lions. The extra point was good and Vinton now led 14-7. Mamou would answer on the ensuing kickoff. Brenton Williams would take the ball and sprint 66 yards for the Demon touchdown. The extra point try would be no good, however, Mamou now had cut the lead to 14-13.
The Lions added another score in the quarter when Vinton would score on a 27 yard touchdown run. The Lions added the extra point and the score was 21-13 as the half came to an end.
The second half belonged to the Lions, as they would score three times in the third quarter to open up the lead on the Demons. The first touchdown came as Vinton would score on a 56 yard pass. The extra point was no good, and the Lions now had the 27-13 lead. Vinton would continue its third quarter scoring as the Lions would run the football in from 15 yards out. This time, the extra point would be perfect and Vinton now lead 34-13 over the Demons. The final Lion score in the quarter came on a three-yard rushing touchdown. Once again the extra point was no good, but Vinton had now extended its lead to 40-13, virtually putting the game out of reach.
Mamou tried to get back into the game in the fourth quarter. A Matthews’ five-yard rushing touchdown closed the gap. The extra point was no good and the score was cut to 40-19 in favor of the Lions. Mamou would continue to try and move the football on Vinton in hopes of mounting a comeback. But, it was too little too late for the Demons. The final score remained 40-19 as time expired in the game.
Offensively, Mamou managed to pick up 195 yards on 31 plays. Leading the way for the Demons was Dylan Duplechin, who had 122 yards passing on six completions. Leading rusher for Mamou was Matthews as he gained 25 yards on five carries. Matthews also hauled in two receptions for 76 yards.
Mamou will now host Lake Arthur on Thursday night in another district 4-2A contest. The Tigers are 4-4 on the season and 1-2 in district. Lake Arthur lost to Welsh 28-14 on Friday.
The Demons are playing for pride now. Mamou has shown that it is a team that does not fold the tent. A win against the Tigers would go a long way in bringing momentum into next season. The Demons are also looking to avoid another 1-9 season.
