Bearcats get important win over rival Elton
If there were any doubt about the ability of the Basile Bearcats to dominate a ranked opponent, that doubt was laid to rest Friday night. The Bearcats scored twice in three separate quarters to propel themselves to a 48-20 victory over the Elton Indians in a key district 5-1A game.
Kendrick Ceasar laid to rest any doubt that he is back in form after suffering a toe injury. The senior running back out-dueled the leading rusher in the state, Marcus Lemoine, earning 202 yards of rushing and 65 yards of receiving while leading the Bearcats to the win.
Basile scored the first points of the game to jump ahead of the Indians. Gabe Fontenot took a 37-yard pass from quarterback Mark Ivory for the touchdown. Mark Ledoux tacked on the extra point and the Bearcats held an early 7-0 lead.
Elton responded to the Bearcat score. Lemoine, who leads all rushers in the entire state, plunged into the end zone from four yards out. The extra point failed and Basile held on to a slim 7-6 lead.
Kendrick Ceasar, one of the most versatile athletes in the state, showed why he is a returning all-stater. Ceasar took the ensuing kickoff back 79 yards for the touchdown. Ledoux added the extra point and the Bearcat lead was now 14-6.
In the second quarter, the Bearcats decided enough was enough and began its journey into domination. Basile would score two times before the half time horn and extend its lead for good.
Fontenot would bull his way from two yards out for the first of the two scores for the Beacats in the second stanza. Once again, Ledoux was on target with the try after and Basile extended its lead to 21-6.
Ceasar would add to his touchdown total for the second Bearcat touchdown in the quarter. An 80-yard gallop by Ceasar and a perfect extra point from Ledoux brought the score to 28-6 going into half- time.
Coming out of halftime, the Elton Indians knew it had to try and keep pace with the Bearcats. Lemoine tried to help in that cause by scoring the first points of the third quarter. Lemoine would scamper in for a nine-yard touchdown run. The two-point pass failed and the Indians had cut the Bearcat lead to 28-12.
Basile would answer the Indian touchdown with force, as the Bearcats would score the next three touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters to seal the victory.
In the third quarter, Ceasar would score a third different way when he took a 17-yard pass from Ivory and strolled into the end zone. The extra point was no good, however, the Bearcats had once again widened their lead as the score was now 34-12.
The Ivory-to-Ceasar combination worked to perfection once again in the fourth quarter. This time it would be a 38-yard touchdown pass that added to the Bearcat lead. This time, Ledoux was perfect on the point after and Basile now lead 41-12.
The Bearcats still had one more score to tack on in the fourth quarter. Ceasar continued his scoring performance as he raced 76 yards for the rushing touchdown. Ledoux added the extra point and the Bearcat lead was now a dominating 48-12.
Elton got one more meaningless score in the fourth quarter. Lemoine would score on a 13-yard run before the end of the game. The two-point conversion was good, but Basile would close out the game with the 48-20 win.
Basile will now host the Oberlin Tigers in the final regular season game. The Bearcats are almost assured a top six finish in the power rankings and would receive the first round bye that comes with it. However, to ensure that ever coveted top-six finish, a win over the Tigers would really seal the deal.
