Trojans get needed win at Beekman Charter
The Sacred Heart Trojans made the long trek to just north of Bastop to take on the Tigers of Beekman Charter in a non-district contest. The Tigers are in their first year of varsity football and the Trojans really had no idea what to expect from Beekman. This can sometimes be the scariest game to play. In the end, it really did not matter, as the Trojans controlled the game from the start in the 45-22 victory.
Sacred Heart scored from the beginning of the game and never looked back in dominating the Tigers. Dylan Scully took the opening kickoff and raced 71 yards to pay dirt to begin the Trojan scoring. Bevan Dupre tacked on the extra point and with only 13 seconds gone in the game, Sacred Heart led 7-0.
The Trojans added to their lead mid-way through the first quarter. Scully was able to work his way from 18 yards out for his second score of the evening. This time, Dupre’s extra point was no good and with 5:51 left in the first period, Sacred Heart led the Tigers 13-0.
Sacred Heart was not done with the first quarter scoring. Trojan quarterback Josh LaHaye was able to hook up with his big tight end Seth Shipp for a seven-yard touchdown pass and catch. Dupre was able to put the ball through the uprights for the extra point. With 1:40 left in the first quarter, Sacred Heart had extended its lead to 20-0.
Beekman Charter was not going to go away too quickly, as the Tigers responded to the 20 point deficit. However, Beekman did not get on the board with its first score in the traditional way. Instead, a 40-yard interception return by McClinton gave the Tigers their first points of the night. The extra point was no good and the score with 3:41 left in the second quarter was 20-6 in favor of Sacred Heart.
The Trojans responded in a hurry. The next drive by Sacred Heart only took 44 seconds. A 29-yard touchdown by Mikey Lauglin offset the Tiger touchdown. Dupre once again added the extra point and the Trojans extended the lead to 27-6 with 2:57 left in the first half.
Not to be outdone, the Tigers cut the Trojan lead back down one more time before half. A 25-yard run by Clayton Tubbs added to Beekman’s total. The Tigers decided to go for the two-point conversion and showed it to be a good decision. The run from the three yard line crossed the goal line for two points. With 33 seconds left in the second quarter the score was now 27-14.
Sacred Heart did not allow the Tiger score to deter the domination the Trojans showed in the first half. The Trojans used every second of the first half and scored with no time left in the second quarter. The 32-yard pass combination of LaHaye to Laughlin added to the Sacred Heart lead. The extra point failed, however, the Trojans took the 33-14 lead into halftime.
The second half was basically no different than the first. The Trojans were able to extend their lead with scores in the third and fourth quarter, only allowing a Tiger touchdown late in the game. In the third quarter, Sacred Heart wasted no time in putting the ball in the end zone. With only 47 seconds gone in the third period, Scully raced 27 yards for the score. The point after touchdown was no good and with 11:13 showing on the clock in the third stanza, Sacred Heart led 39-14.
The Trojans extended their lead in the fourth quarter. Laughlin took the ball and scampered 56 yards to the end zone for Sacred Heart’s final score of the game. The extra point was once again no good and the Trojans now led 45-14 with 7:34 left in the ball game.
The Tigers were able to add one more touchdown before the end of the game. A one-yard plunge by Keaton Hunt finished the scoring for both squads. Beekman tacked on the two-point conversion score to set the final at 45-22 in favor of the Trojans.
On the night, Sacred Heart managed to accumulate 316 yards of total offense, 253 yards of that came on the ground. Leading the Trojans in the contest was Scully who ran for 110 yards and three touchdowns. Laughlin added 104 yards on the ground and three touchdowns. LaHaye completed two passes for 39 yards and two touchdowns.
With the win, Sacred Heart now moves to 5-4 on the year. The Trojans will next host their long-time rivals, the St.Edmund Blue Jays. Sacred Heart has a lot riding on this final regular season contest. If the Trojans can garner a win against the Blue Jays, they will share the district 5-1A district title with both St. Ed’s and Catholic of Pointe Coupee. More importantly, a victory will cement a Trojan playoff berth. This Friday will determine a lot for the Trojans. With the home crowd behind the boys in blue, hopefully Sacred Heart can use that momentum for a much-needed win.
